Where Everybody Belongs: The Gulfton Management District is Proud to Support Company on Stage

There’s a theater tucked into the Gulfton community that has been quietly building something extraordinary for nearly five decades. It doesn’t have a Broadway-sized budget or a celebrity donor list. What it has is something harder to manufacture: a genuine belief that the arts belong to everyone, and a track record of living that belief out every single season.

Company on Stage has called the Gulfton area home, and the Gulfton Management District is proud to be a sponsor of this community institution.

A Legacy Built on Inclusion

Company on Stage was founded in 1977 by Joyce McNally, who at the time was serving as associate director at the Alley Theatre — one of Houston’s most prestigious performance venues. Rather than staying in the world of professional theater, Joyce and her husband set out to do something different: bring theater to the community, one class, one show, one cast member at a time.

They started by offering acting classes for children and adults. By 1978, they staged their first two productions under the Company on Stage name: “The Wizard of Oz” and “Aladdin and the Magic Lamp.” By 1982, the organization had grown enough to secure its own theater space, which it opened with a season of 14 productions. From two shows to fourteen in just a few years — a remarkable leap that reflected the community’s hunger for exactly what Company on Stage was offering.

That founding philosophy remains at the core of everything the organization does today. “We believe that theater is for everybody,” says the organization’s leadership. “It doesn’t matter what your background is. It doesn’t matter where you come from, what your experience is. If you have an interest and a love — whether it’s on stage, behind stage, or on the business side of things — there’s a place for you here.”

A Home Away From Home

For many of the volunteers, cast members, and staff who make Company on Stage run, the organization has become far more than a place to rehearse. It has become a community.

One longtime volunteer describes a journey that began as a stage mom watching her child perform, that evolved into stage managing, and eventually into a full commitment to the organization’s mission. “What we do is fantastic, and the reason we do it is great,” she says. “For me, it’s about what we offer the kids. I watched my kids grow up in this theater, and I want that for others.”

Another team member traces her love of theater back to the fourth grade, and describes theater programs as the through-line that connected her across a childhood of frequent moves and new schools. “Finding theater programs where I could immediately build friendships and find belonging was something I gravitated towards,” she explains. “It gave me such confidence. I was incredibly shy growing up, and theater always gave me somewhere where I felt like my voice could have value.”

She discovered Company on Stage in 2016, driving from Clear Lake to the Gulfton area multiple days a week — and never stopped. “I ended up meeting my best friend and falling in love with this organization.”

Good for Gulfton

Company on Stage isn’t just a theater company. It’s an economic and cultural asset for the surrounding community. Audiences and cast members who travel to Gulfton for shows frequently visit local restaurants and businesses before and after performances. Area establishments including La Tapatia, Mia’s Table, and Antipasto’s have all welcomed the partnership, hosting flyers and supporting the organization in tangible ways.

“Company on Stage brings in so many people from outside of the Gulfton District,” notes one team member. “It really just helps everybody.”

That’s exactly the kind of community anchor the Gulfton Management District was built to support. When organizations like Company on Stage thrive, the whole neighborhood benefits — in foot traffic, in cultural vibrancy, and in the quiet but powerful way that a community defines itself by what it chooses to value.

The Gulfton Management District is honored to support Company on Stage and its mission to make the arts affordable, accessible, and alive for every member of this community.
