In Gulfton’s Corner: How Cactus Boxing Gym Is Changing Lives One Round at a Time

There is a gym on Gulfton Street where the work is real, the discipline is non-negotiable, and the results speak for themselves. Cactus Boxing Gym at 5320 Gulfton St is not just a place to train. For the owner and the community it serves, it is a place where direction is found, confidence is built, and lives are genuinely changed.

The Man Behind the Gym

The owner’s path to Cactus Boxing Gym was not a straight line — and that’s exactly the point. After nearly nine years of training people in the sport he loves, he opened Houston Fight Shop, a combat sports equipment store he built from the ground up. “I started with like 10 pairs of gloves, 10 pairs of headgear, nine shin guards,” he recalls. “I did not have the funding. It was not given to me. So I had to start at the bottom.” From that modest start he grew the store to over 100 pairs of gloves and a loyal customer base before channeling everything into Cactus Boxing Gym — the next evolution of a vision he has been building his entire adult life.

Why Boxing, Why Gulfton

Ask him why he chose boxing, and the answer comes quickly: “The purpose was because I’d rather do this than anything else.”

But ask him why he chose Gulfton, and the answer goes even deeper.

“This is truly one of the most diverse places I’ve ever been in, and I’ve lived on every side of this city,” he says. “Africans, Central Americans, Middle Eastern people, Mexicans, Cubans — it’s absolutely amazing. I love the fact that I can come over here and no one speaks to me in English. I have to learn Spanish, and that makes me better.”

He is also quick to push back on misconceptions about the neighborhood. “What people get wrong about a place like this is that these people are not poor and pitiful — they’re mostly immigrants. This is a great community, and it feels like a whole other world in the best way possible. If I get a chance to help this community shine, I’m going to do it.”

What Boxing Teaches That Nothing Else Can

The real value of Cactus Boxing Gym, its owner will tell you, is not about what happens in the ring. It is about what the ring teaches you for life.

“Boxing builds confidence. It allows young men to get to the next level through discipline, perseverance, and learning to push through adversity. In communities like this, it’s real easy to get stuck. Boxing gives you a wider perspective on the world and a place to put your energy into something that might not have gone to the right place.”

He is particularly passionate about what boxing offers young people who may not see the connection between effort and reward in other parts of their lives. “In boxing, you get the paycheck. You put in the work, you get the paycheck. No one starts at the top. No one was Floyd Mayweather or Canelo in the beginning. It all starts at the bottom. There’s no skipping steps.”

That lesson — that mastering the small things is what builds to the next level — is one he has watched transform students over and over again. “Once you progress and you progress and you progress, you see it. Man, I remember when I couldn’t throw a jab correctly or even jump rope. But since my coach yelled at me a hundred times and I got punched in the head a hundred times, now I get it.”
