Gulfton Art Feature: Floyd Mendoza’s Gulfton Unity Mural

Gulfton Unity: A Mural Rooted in Memory, Opportunity, and Aspiration

Another powerful mural unveiled in Gulfton tells a story grounded in lived experience and the hope of inspiring future generations. Titled Gulfton Unity, the mural was created by Houston street artist Floyd Mendoza as part of the Southwest Houston murals initiative led by Lesley Briones through Precinct 4’s PlaceMAKE program.

For Floyd, the inspiration behind Gulfton Unity is deeply personal. Growing up in a community similar to Gulfton, he drew from childhood memories of shared spaces, creativity as an outlet, and imagining what could be possible. His goal was to create the kind of artwork he wished he had seen as a kid — something visible, affirming, and motivating.

The mural captures the spirit of togetherness found in neighborhoods like Gulfton and Sharpstown, celebrating the everyday environment while elevating it through bold public art. By placing this work in a highly visible community corridor, the project invites young people to see themselves reflected in their surroundings and to believe in broader possibilities for their future.

Gulfton Unity is located alongside Paths Forward along Glenmont Drive, west of Renwick Drive, at Sparx Logistics (5630 Renwick Dr, Houston, TX 77081). Through Precinct 4’s PlaceMAKE initiative, murals like this transform walls into landmarks — strengthening neighborhood identity, honoring lived experiences, and inspiring connection across the community.
