For many families in Gulfton, the soccer field is more than a place to play — it is a space for growth, connection, and opportunity. At Burnett Bayland Park, that vision is being brought to life by Coach Abey, founder of Classic Soccer Academy of Greater Houston.
Coach Abey brings more than a decade of playing and coaching experience to the field. Having spent 13 years playing competitive soccer in Ethiopia, including experience connected to national-level programs, he later pursued formal coaching education before launching his academy in Houston. What began in September 2021 with just six or seven children has since grown into a registered nonprofit organization focused on youth development through sport. The mission of Classic Soccer Academy of Greater Houston goes beyond athletic training. Coach Abey created the program to help develop healthy, active, and confident young people — emphasizing discipline, teamwork, and positive habits alongside soccer fundamentals. The academy offers affordable soccer classes, making organized sports accessible to families in underserved areas who may otherwise face financial barriers to participation.Gulfton was a natural home for the academy. As one of Houston’s most densely populated and diverse neighborhoods, the area is rich with families seeking positive outlets for their children. Practicing at Burnett Bayland Park allows the program to remain close to the community it serves, creating a welcoming and familiar environment for parents and players alike. While Coach Abey’s shared cultural background helps him connect with many families in the area, the academy itself is intentionally inclusive. Children of all backgrounds are welcome to participate, reflecting Gulfton’s diversity and the belief that sports can unite communities across cultures. Parents are actively engaged, and Coach Abey works closely with families to support children both on and off the field as they learn, grow, and adapt.
Through dedication, patience, and a commitment to access, Coach Abey continues to make a meaningful impact in Gulfton — using soccer as a tool to build healthier futures and stronger community connections, one practice at a time.
