On Thursday, August 22nd, the Gulfton Management District Board had the privilege of honoring the first recipient of its Business Leader Recognition Award: Belen Bailey, owner of Sweets by Belen. Belen’s story embodies the spirit of perseverance, passion, and dedication. As a minority, woman, and immigrant in America, Belen serves as an inspiring example of overcoming challenges to pursue her dreams.

A Journey Rooted in Tradition and Service

Originally from Peru, Belen’s passion for baking was sparked by her grandmother, who was also a baker. Belen fondly remembers helping her mother and grandmother gather stones to build roads and recalls an organization that provided free food to workers. Inspired by this act of kindness, she vowed to contribute to feeding others in her future.

While her family’s goal was to ensure she would not have to work with her hands like her grandmother and mother, Belen’s path took a unique turn. Despite their aspirations for her, she has emerged as one of the most prominent Peruvian bakers in Houston. Ironically, her journey to becoming a renowned baker did not begin with formal training. She was never taught to bake as a child, relying instead on memories of her grandmother’s baking and phone calls back home for recipes. Belen’s career in the United States began in education. She worked as an educator, but her passion for baking grew as she shared her homemade treats with colleagues and students. Encouraged by the growing demand for her baked goods, Belen took a leap of faith and decided to start her own business.

Initially, Belen was hesitant to tell her mother about leaving her job as an educator, a profession considered prestigious in her family, especially given their hopes that Belen would never have to work in a kitchen. Her mother’s first visit to the bakery was met with skepticism, as it was far from the polished establishment it is today. However, over time, her mother has grown to be proud of the successful business her daughter has built.

A Resilient Entrepreneur and Community Advocate

Belen’s journey as an entrepreneur has not been without its challenges. She has had to remodel her bakery with a limited budget and navigate the COVID-19 downturn, which shuttered many businesses nationwide. Despite these hurdles, Belen has thrived, driven by her love for the Gulfton community. Her customers, many of whom are immigrants, find joy in the desserts she serves and the warmth she and her staff bring to every interaction.

Beyond her bakery, Belen has become a vocal advocate for female entrepreneurs, sharing her story at events across Houston to inspire others. She is also committed to giving back, frequently partnering with nonprofits to donate a portion of her sales to causes such as providing wigs for women battling breast cancer.

Recognition for a Remarkable Contribution

Belen was nominated for this award by District J City Council Member Edward Pollard, recognizing her outstanding contributions to the community. At the board meeting, a representative from Council Member Pollard’s office presented Belen with a certificate of recognition, celebrating her accomplishments and her positive impact on the community.

Our Wishes for Belen

The Gulfton Management District wishes Belen continued success in her journey. Her story of resilience and dedication is a testament to the power of following one’s passion, no matter the obstacles.
