As we usher in the New Year, the Gulfton Management District is thrilled to spotlight a transformative milestone for the community: the opening of Gulfton’s first high school, SER-Niños High School. This groundbreaking addition marks a fresh chapter in the district’s educational landscape, bringing new opportunities for students and families in the 77081 zip code.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony, held on October 16, 2024, symbolized more than the completion of a modern educational facility—it heralded a promising future for Gulfton. The event showcased the beautiful new building through a series of photos, capturing the excitement and pride shared by the community. It was a day to reflect on the vision and dedication that turned this dream into a reality.

SER-Niños has been a cornerstone of education in Gulfton since its founding, initially providing much-needed elementary and middle school alternatives in an overcrowded area. As the New Year begins, the school continues its mission to bridge educational disparities, particularly for the many immigrant families who call Gulfton home. The new high school is poised to empower students to thrive within their community and beyond.

At the ceremony, Principal Ms. Constantine shared a powerful message:
“This ribbon-cutting represents the creation of something new for this community. The high school is finished—or maybe it’s just the beginning. As the only high school in the 77081 zip code, we now have the opportunity to bring a robust secondary program that teaches students to be strong, dream big, and support their community.”

The high school features state-of-the-art facilities, including a college and career center, designed to serve both students and the broader Gulfton community. Attendees of the ceremony were also touched by a thoughtful addition—personal essays written by students detailing why SER-Niños is a great place to learn. These heartfelt reflections gave a glimpse into the transformative impact the school is already making.

Established in 1996 by Dianne Mancus, the Houston Hispanic Forum, and dedicated community members, SER-Niños began with 155 students in a church setting. Over the years, it has grown to include a middle school in 2004 and now, a high school in 2024. This growth reflects the unwavering commitment of SER-Niños to provide quality education, enrichment, and family support that fosters academic, social, and emotional success.

This New Year, we celebrate the collaboration and hard work of SER-Niños board members, administrators, staff, parents, and the community for achieving this significant milestone. Special recognition goes to Mission Construction and Merriman Holt Powell Architects, whose dedication brought this vision to life.
