The Gulfton Management District is delighted to have sponsored this year’s annual Houston Police Department (HPD) Back to School Supply Drive. This event, held at the HPD storefront in Gulfton, was a big win for the community, with over 900 backpacks given to students from elementary to high school. Despite the rainy weather, the event was a great success, with more people attending than in previous years.

The event officially started at 9 AM, but the excitement from the community was clear early on. By 6:30 AM, residents had already formed a line that stretched across the front of the retail shopping center, eager to make sure their children received the supplies they needed for the upcoming school year. The large turnout, despite the bad weather, showed how much the community cares about education.

Tammy Rodriguez, the owner’s agent and Board Chair of the Gulfton Management District, shared her surprise and gratitude, saying, “We expected a good turnout, but this was beyond what we imagined. We can always count on HPD to come out, but the community really showed up this time.” Her words highlight the strong community spirit in Gulfton, especially during events that support local students and families.

Commander Reuben of the HPD also shared his thoughts, stating, “I am always overjoyed to see the support of our community businesses and the outpouring of the community to attend each event we host for South Gessner via our Gulfton Storefront. Despite the rain, we were able to still have a wonderful event where we were able to give out hundreds of backpacks to deserving families. It’s days like today that remind you of the reason you took the oath to serve and positively engage the community. Today was heartwarming.”

The vendors and sponsors who took part in the drive also played a key role in its success. Even with worries about the rain, they stayed committed to supporting the community. The vendors were pleasantly surprised by the large number of residents who attended despite the weather. Their dedication helped make sure the event ran smoothly and that every child left with the supplies they needed.
