Meeting Agenda

This month we are pleased to have Connect Community & Up Art Studio share an update on the Hillcroft murals. The Hillcroft St. corridor, already transformed with bike lanes, wider sidewalks, and a new stop light at Dashwood, is now further enhanced by the vivid stories painted on its retaining walls. Through a collaboration between Connect Community and UP Art Studio, three remarkable murals have been brought to life, each a celebration of the diverse cultural tapestry of Southwest Houston.

The artists, Brenda Chapa, Sims, and Santiago Perez, were carefully chosen by a selection panel comprised of community members, ensuring that the voices and preferences of the locality were heard and represented. Each artist brought their unique narrative and vision to the project, deeply influenced by their personal journeys and cultural backgrounds. Brenda Chapa’s mural draws from her Mexican roots and her life in Houston’s Southwest side, encapsulating the vibrant community spirit. Sims, with his graffiti and pop art-inspired style, infused his work with bold colors and dynamic forms, echoing the energy of the area. Santiago Perez, blending his Colombian heritage with his experiences in Houston, created a piece that vibrates with color and life, symbolizing the diversity and unity of the community.

In addition, we have special guests Good Reason Houston, an education non-profit focused on increasing the number of students learning in great public schools.
